The US Has 761 Military Bases Across the Planet

The US Has 761 Military Bases Across the Planet, and We Simply Never Talk About It.

By Tom Engelhardt – AlterNet – San Francisco,CA,USA – 8 Sept 2008

‘America garrison the globe in ways that really are unprecedented, and yet, if you live in the United States, you basically wouldn’t know it. … Sometimes they live on military bases built to the tune of billions of dollars that amount to sizeable American towns (with accompanying amenities), sometimes on stripped down forward operating bases that may not even have showers. When those troops don’t stay, often American equipment does — carefully stored for further use at tiny “cooperative security locations,” known informally as “lily pads” (from which U.S. troops, like so many frogs, could assumedly leap quickly into a region in crisis).’

Imminent strike by US on Iran?

Dutch intelligence: US attack on Iran’s nuclear program imminent…

Sep. 1, 2008
JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST

The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran’s weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country’s De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.

The report claimed that the Dutch operation had been “extremely successful,” and had been stopped because the US military was planning to hit targets that were “connected with the Dutch espionage action.”

The impending air-strike on Iran was to be carried out by unmanned aircraft “within weeks,” the report claimed, quoting “well placed” sources. …

BMD blowback — Part Two

Patriot PAC-3 anti-ballistic missile interceptor battery.

by Margot Light London (UPI): Sep 4, 2008

The U.S.-built Ground-based Mid-course Interceptors planned for Poland might be directed against “rogue states” such as North Korea and Iran, but no one pretends that the Patriot PAC-3 anti-ballistic missile interceptors that can shoot down short-range or intermediate-range ballistic missiles or the stationing of American troops in Poland are directed at any country other than Russia.

And the reason why Poland feels that it needs Patriot PAC-3 anti-ballistic missile interceptor batteries and American forces is Russia’s threat that Poland is “making itself a target.” …

BMD dilemmas — Part Two

Moscow (UPI): Sep 3, 2008

Russia does not want to be dragged into another arms race, but it should not ignore the emerging threats. The Kremlin’s most obvious reply to the U.S. missile defense deployment plans to build a Ground-based Mid-course Interceptor base in Poland would be to equip the Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles of Russia’s Strategic Missile Force with supersonic maneuverable warheads …

Outside View: BMD blowback — Part One

Margot Light, London (UPI): Sep 3, 2008

The agreement concluded between the United States and Poland on Aug. 20 on the deployment of 10 interceptor missiles, part of America’s planned Ballistic Missile Defense system, was an inadvertent — and possibly unanticipated — result of the Russian-Georgian conflict. After months of prevarication, the Poles stopped increasing the level of military aid they demanded in return for hosting the missiles …
